It's brand new - is charged up; Fitbit app works, but tracker not responding; just shows msg "www.fitbit.com/setup". Can someone please help me ☆ or have I bought a dud. Have spent much of today trying to get it going. Help!

That message means that the fitbit doesn't think that it's connected to an account so I would go through the setup process again to relink it.
In the account section of the app (the icon looks like an ID card) select "set up a device"

It's beginning to sound like you have a dud. I would contact customer support as they may be able to see what's happening from the server side. contact.fitbit.com
