How is "Averages xxxx steps per Day" calculated?

Android app- I click my profile and it says "Averages 780 steps per Day"

I didn't set up the Fitbit until late in the day yesterday... now I feel like my average steps per day will be dragged down for quite some time.  I tried setting the entire day to "Driving" which wiped out the steps, but then there were 13 mysterious steps listed, but not measured... making the average even worse!

I suppose it doesn't matter, but it's frustrating that my average steps may be affected by my first partial day of use.  I'd love for my average steps per day to be accurate and not include  3h of the first day.

Is that average the past 7 days?  30 days?  forever?

'Average steps per day' in that context is for the 7 full days previous to this one. After you have a full weeks' data, at midnight it adds the total for the day just ended and drops the earliest day of the 7. So it is a rolling average of the last 7 complete days. So just starting out, you should see it increase at midnight until you get 7 days of data, then it will somewhat steady out.
