I am trying to join daily and weekly things it won't let me join says you can only join 5 I'm only in 2 ?

I am having the exact same issue. I reported this earlier in the month to fitbit and they told me that they are working hard on it. Unfortunately it is hindering use of the device and if it doesn't clear up soon, I will have to move on to another fitness tracker.

I have also had this same problem. I have been having the issue for months. It's the same message you get if you actually did try to join 5 challenges, but it happens when you have only joined 2.

My guess is that it is counting "Ended" challenges in the "In Progress" challenges.
