Inaccurate distance after sync

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

It doesn't happen all the time and I can't figure out when or why it happens.  If I go for a walk without using connected GPS (versa btw) then go to sync afterward, it somehow adds another .5 miles roughly. Giving me more distance than steps. I know they will never perfectly match up, but they're normally pretty close. (Usually more steps than distance because of my short legs getting more steps to the distance.)  I've tried to contact Fitbit multiple times but I've just been told to reset everything, which we all know never really works.

Hello @OhSheeshV.

Thanks for bringing this up.

I'd like to take a closer look at what is going on. Could you take some screen shots that show activities that show this inaccuracy? Also let me know what should be the correct distance in those activities.

Also, have you tried checking on the web Dashboard to see if the same discrepancy exists? If not, please do check on that, maybe it is only an app thing.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

It doesn't happen all the time, and I never know when it'll happen. I thought it used to be an "off brand" clock face that did it, but it just happened with a Fitbit face.  So I can't even tell if it's just a Versa thing, App thing or what. I will try to catch it, but like I said, I never know when it happens so it's just a surprise and I have to accept the added distance.

@OhSheeshV, you say this happens when you are not using gps. Could it be that because you are doing a lot of steps due to your short stride it is calculating the distance based on a longer stride?

I know you can personalise your stride distance but you need someone a bit more savvy with the system than me to tell you how if you need help with that.

Sorry, if I am way off base here, it was just a thought.

Cheers

Hello @OhSheeshV and @Lilbiddy.

@Lilbiddy Thanks for sharing your input on the matter. That is definitely a possibility.

If @OhSheeshV was walking faster than usual, or the Fitbit perceived it like that, then they could have been awarded with a different distance, higher, than what they actually walked.

Hopefully it will not happen again, please let us know if it does.

Feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance.

I appreciate your input but I'm not sure why it wouldn't register on the watch then?? So for example, Once I finish my walk let's say I have 6000 steps which usually puts me around 2.5 miles.  Or at least that's what the watch says. Then Once I sync it'll add somewhere around .5 mile onto my total distance. So i'll still have the 6000 steps but now I'll have 3 miles, if not more.  It just seems weird that hit happens after I sync.

Hello @OhSheeshV.

There are some reasons as to why this might be happening, it could be a software issue or perhaps the distance was inaccurately calculated by the Fitbit or the Dashboard once it is logged. It is definitely weird but let's stay hopeful that it won't happen any more.

Be sure visit one of our Discussion boards, if you ever have the time. There are lot of topics to talk about.

I have been having the same issue. When I finish my run/walk, I will be at X number but the distance jumps up about .5 miles once it syncs. It changes it on the app and the watch. I noticed it before but didn't think much of it. It happened both times I ran this week.

It's happened every single day this past week.  I thought it was the clock face I was using but nope.  I switched back to a fitbit clock face and it's still happening. PLEASE find a fix. Please fix current trackers rather than putting out new ones.

Please see if you can look into this issue with the distance adding on after a sync. This is really annoying.

You cant tell me this is normal after you sync. It's never been this off! I ended a walk with 2.34 miles.  this is unbelievable

Hello @OhSheeshV.

Thanks for sharing that picture.

In this case, would that be the only walk that you took for the day or have you used the Fitbit through the day? Do keep in mind that it will show the total distance for the day and not for that single walk in that main tile of the Dashboard.

Let me know if there are any further questions.

I've been having this same issue for the last 2 weeks. For example, I wore my Versa all day today, and got about 12,700 steps. My watch said I had covered about 4.6 miles (accurate, based on where I walked today, and double-checked against Google Maps). Then, I synced with the app, and now I'm at 7.6 miles. Same number of steps, but THREE extra miles. What's going on?? I've removed the Versa from my account, done a factory reset on the watch, and then re-added to the app. But, I'm still having the same issues.

Welcome to the  Forums @kemeina.

Thanks for sharing those details on the matter.

Could you share some screenshots of the activities that are showing incorrect distance? I'd like to take a closer look.

Look forward to your reply.

Sure thing.

Scenario 1. Yesterday morning, my walk to work. Takes 30 minutes, and it's a 1.5 mile walk. This is what the app recorded in that 30 minutes (2.9 miles).

Scenario 2. Yesterday's walk home. I normally take a slightly longer route, which is 1.7 miles. For some reason, the app saw that correctly:

IMG_3142.PNGIMG_3143.PNGIMG_3144.PNG

Scenario 3. Walking to work on Monday 2/11. Should be ~1.5 miles, but it's ~2.5...

(And you can see in the other spikes that the walk home also miscalculated)

IMG_3145.PNGIMG_3146.PNG

Scenario 4. Walking to work on 2/5. Should be ~1.5. App shows 2.8 miles.IMG_3147.PNGIMG_3151.PNG

Scenario 5. Walking home on 2/5. Should be ~1.7, but it's 2.6IMG_3148.PNGIMG_3150.PNGIMG_3149.PNG

Note: I live in San Francisco, so there are hills everywhere. My walk both to and from work has a hill smack in the middle. The elevation/floors counted seems fairly accurate, but it looks like the hill climb is throwing off the mileage. That's all I can think of. But, I've been using a Blaze for years, and now a Versa, and this mileage problem has only shown up since mid-January. Step count is pretty accurate. AND, the mileage count on my Versa is accurate UNTIL I sync with the app, and then both app AND the watch show this nonsense mileage.

Ok, here’s today’s scenario.

Walked around this morning in spurts, 0.76 miles total. The watch is correct:D7BC8BBC-3D47-4BC5-B031-D0B1CF8C1374.jpeg

Then a little walking. Nothing major. Then a 1.6 mile walk. Total on my watch was 2.43. Then I synced. 3.44 miles on the app and my watch changes to match. It’s  like every time I take a longer walk, the app overcalculates.

Hello @kemeina.

I apologize for the delay in my response. Thanks for sharing all of those screenshots.

It definitely seems very strange that the information changes like that. Are you using the GPS to track these walks or letting the Fitbit calculate distance on its own?

Look forward to your reply.

I’ve used both GPS and auto calculation and I get the same result—accurate watch, wrong app, sync, wrong on both.
