Sync with Moto X Play (Android 6.0) is a hit and miss a lot of times. After opening the app Sync doesn't work and I have to manually try multiple times.

Agreed. It's been like this for quite some time now. Restarting the phone and/or tracker doesn't make a difference. I've resorted to syncing with my iPad in the morning and evening because I can't sync with my Moto X Pure or my Mac. All of this stuff used to "just work".

Hey hey hey @SunsetRunner welcome to the Fitbit Community! It's nice to have you here 🙂 Please excuse me for the delay in my response. To answer to your question as well as the one from @tastybrew, please note that the Moto X Play and X Pure are not listed on the compatible phone document. This means that maybe your tracker would sync but other features won't work properly because it is not official. However, sometimes you should take a look on the list so you can see if your phone is now compatible.
Now, for the Mac, could you please let me know if you still have this syncing issue?
I'll be waiting for your reply and wish you a wonderful day!

I've been able to get both my Moto X Pure and Mac to sync, for now. Nothing changed on my part, it just started working. Go figure.

I tried every suggestion I could find to sync my Charge 2 with Moto X Play Edition, and none of them worked (restart BT, reboot, location services, etc). Here is what DID work for me. I found that Android had paired the device. I "forgot" the Charge 2 from the advanced Bluetooth settings, and then I reboot the phone. Forgetting the Charge 2 alone was not enough, I had to reboot as well. It's been syncing for a few days since then. I hope this helps someone else.

@RChinmaya @sweetcw I recommend confirming that your make and model phone is listed on the supported devices list here. If so, I suggest trying out the rest of the troubleshooting suggestions listed here. Hope that helps to get you back on track.
