Hi , I have just purchased a new Fitbit versa, my mobile phone is a Huawei p20 pro. My Fitbit was bought from Amazon via the official Fitbit shop, I have set it up and let it do the first update for the latest firmwear etc. When trying to download Spotify for the device it says I need the lastest updates, this is odd as it is a brand new device. Also when syncing messages is stated it needed a phone reset to establish connection I did this and it still states it needs one. Is there something I'm not doing here ?

Check your fitbit's app permissions. Phone settings - apps - Fitbit - power - turn of power management and make sure the app can run in background. 

You also should have gotten a message at some point to link the Versa 2, this is asking for permission to pair the Versa 2 to the phones Bluetooth.
