Yesterday, I surpassed 4800 lifetime km but still have not yet received the "Sahara" badge. I have logged out of the app, rebooted my phone, made sure there were no pending updates and cleared the Fitbit app cache. Still no success.
As life turns out, I surpassed 25,000 steps for the first time yesterday as well (after surpassing 4800 km) and got the "Classics" badge almost instantly. So, everything seems to be working. Just still waiting for the "Sahara" badge.

Well, I contacted Fitbit support for a problem with not getting a badge that I earned yesterday. Support said that there is a new version of the app that has been released. Not very comforting. Guess, I will have to wait and see.

@TheNeilHaley Is there any possibility that you manually added activities, let's say, because you weren't wearing your Fitbit? Data must be collected on your Fitbit to count towards badges.
I also moved your post to the Android app forum, a better fit for this issue.

No manually activities. Every km was earned while wearing my Inspire 3.
Very disappointing that Google does not care about us anymore. Support does nothing for us but 'wait for the next version '
The developers need to stop breaking everything. Maybe the developers are bored and doing this intentionally as "make work" projects.

Sorry that my suggestion wasn't the epic answer you needed. It is a common reason for not getting a badge. I hope it shows up for you.

I am not looking for an epic answer, I am looking for a resolution to my issue. Reading the communities, once the Fitbit app has became under Google control, there are now more things broken than working correctly. Features that we relied on, were removed and the usefulness of the Fitbit app dropped.
Cut/Paste answers are no longer enough. Google developers need to put a hold on the Fitbit app, go back and fix what is broken. This is software development and maintenance 101.
