I walk for 7+ hrs daily and try to get at least 40k steps per day. Most of my steps come from a treadmill I use at my desk. I previously had a galaxy watch, and the Samsung health app seamlessly switched to phone steps when my hand with the watch was on the desk/keyboard. I upgraded to a pixel watch 4, and now I can see the steps going up, but then they all get deleted by the thousands. I tried everything I could find online as well as with the Google support, and the only resolution I was offered was to not wear my watch for the several hours a day I'm at my desk, which I don't want to do because I want all of the other tracking.
Please add some ability for the user to set priority to phone over watch, either based off location (at home or office), or manual trigger like picking the treadmill workout. I've liked everything else about the watch and tracking, but I'm on the verge of returning it now since desk walking is such a huge part of my day and I use the step counter as a daily goal.
