Hello @hether, let me start by giving you a warm welcome to the Fitbit Community. If this phone is not in our list of Compatible Devices either is still pending to be tested by our teams to guarantee it will support the Fitbit app and its features. Other reason of a device incompatibility is the OS. For some devices that have some time in the market, the OS version is too old to support the most recent versions of the app allowing only to install only oldest versions of the app, causing some issues since the app is not working with the latest updates.
For those mobile phones that are not listed, not necessarily mean it wont work with the Fitbit app. I have too a phone that is not listed, but I'm able to use all the features. The same happen with your mobile phone which you have being able to use with Fitbit. The difference with devices like ours is that we cannot guarantee if the app will work as it should.
Let me know if you have more questions. I'll be happy to help you.

Ok, so how do we get older versions of the app? My mom shouldn't be penalized for having a newer Fitbit but an older phone...unless Fitbit wishes to buy her a new phone.

@RobertoME and @Hi_Dare the problem is that the last available update for 4.4 is rubbish. They didn't fix it before changing the minimum requirement to Android 5. So basically you've been dumped on by fitbit.
If you don't want to get a retro version via other channels there is a rather old and more basic version on the Amazon app store.
