Step count varies

When I work out in the elliptical the step count varies by as much as 2000 per hour. One time it will record 4800 and the next work out will be 2500. Always on the same machine and little variation in intensity. Is there a way to set the sensitivity better?

It could be from a difference in what you do with the hand with the fitbit, assuming it is a wrist-worn device.  Do you sometimes hold something that keeps your wrist stationary and other times let it swing freely, or at least move with the elliptical handle.  If the wrist is holding something still, it will not be able to detect steps.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

No. I use the exact same machine and make a point to not use the fitbit. Hand for anything like sweat wiping etc.
