"Running Workouts" Pixel Watch 4 - not working?

I tried "Running Workouts" on my Pixel Watch 4.
...and it seems not to work or I am just too stupid 😬

It is set up like in the attached screenshot:

When I start this run on my watch it never enters the next stage.
Not automatically and not when I use the "Next" button.

It always stays at "Run 1/10".

The only thing that happens when I use the "Next" button is a short message what the next stage would be.
...and sometimes the order of the stats changes. Which is very annoying and confusing.

Has anybody had a smiliar experience?
...any Idea what I am doing wrong?
