I went on a bike ride today, 9.7 miles in 41 minutes and my blaze logged the trail and everything great. It even had the map and times, etc. But the calorie count was around 50, way too low. The gear on my bike put it at about 400 and when I entered the rough parameters manually into the fitbit app I got 405 calories. Why is the automatic tracker so bad?
I don't have the hr monitor on so I can preserve battery, does this have to be on for the automatic tracker to be accurate? If that is the case then shame on you fitbit, no other trackers require the use of such an inaccurate and battery consuming feature to that extent.

Most definitely need the HR on.
It uses your heart rate to determine how hard your working.
Did you use the auto detect or manualy started the bike mide.
