My Fitbit says it’s version is 8.402.1 but I found online that the most rescent version is version 17.8.402.1.

 

I never see an option to update the firmware so was assuming it was up-to-date but then saw the 17 on the version when I searched online for the latest release.

 

Are the two versions the same or is my Fitbit on an old version?

Don't worry - they are the same and you are on the current version. Fitbit - confusingly - sometimes quote the first part of the firmware and other times do not.
