Blaze is undercounting steps

Hi,

My stride length is 0.8 meters which I've set in the app (doesn't really matter for step counting. only used to calculate distance)
I've walked for 4000 meters (that means 5000 steps considering the stride length).
Blaze measured 4275 steps which resulted in a distance of 3420 meters.
So the conclusion is Blaze counted about 85% of the steps I did.
Any tips on how to adjust the step count?

Regards,
Tavi

Hi there @tavi85. Welcome to the Fitbit Community Forums! 🙂

When it comes to step tracking, the best tip that I can give you would be to make sure to swing your arm when you're walking.

Fitbit trackers use a 3-axis accelerometer to understand your motions. They have a finely tuned algorithm for step counting. The algorithm is designed to look for motion patterns that are most indicative of people walking. The algorithm determines whether a motion's size is large enough by setting a threshold. If the motion and its subsequent acceleration measurement meet the threshold, the motion will be counted as a step.

Hope you find this helpful and you can try gain and see how it goes!

Oh my @tavi85 i just looked at your calculations.

A 0.8 meter stride means that one step is less than 1 meter.

5000 steps times 0.8 stride will give a distance of 4000 meters.

4275 with a 0.8 stride works out to be exactly 3420 meters.

The best way to test the steps would be to take a walk and count a number of steps in your head, i do 200, 500, or 1000, then stop walking and compare to what the tracker recorded.

:)) well of course it adds up.
Because the distance is calculated by multiplying stride length with steps.
The problem is that the real distance is 4 km (checked wirh Google maps)
not 3.4 km as resulted from steps times stride length.
Anyway I walked back on the same path and recorded 4725 steps this time.
Kind of big difference I would say between recordings for same path.

same distance.PNGAs you can see 2 walks on the same path (4km measured on Google Maps):

So: longer time => lower pace => fewer steps

I suspect that on the second walk, because I walked faster my hand was swinging more resulting in more steps being counted.
