Or has anyone else's Blaze just started playing up lately (not syncing, not talking to partner apps, not connecting to phone etc)? Does anyone else find it suspicious that this coincides with the release of the new fitbit ionic?

I have both the Ionic and blaze and both suffer from their fair share of syncing issues, so it's not just the blaze. Fitbit have always had some quirkiness to the syncing process. Sometimes it just stops for no apparent reason.

Ocaisionly I have problems with the Blaze syncing, holding in the lect and lower right buttons seems to get me back in business.
