Does information entered manually not count as steps during challenges? And if not, why?

Steps added manually can be falsified, so to keep things fair, those steps don't count in challenges.

I can understand that but it sucks when your battery dies and you manually enter your workout afterwards.

Just yesterday in a challenge, one of the people said they took a five mile run and the Fitbit died.
