How do I get correct steps for a bike ride?

Hi I've noticed that I don't think I'm getting enough steps for my bike riding. I'm commuting 32 miles per day and only getting approx 10k steps. GCC advises that this should be approx 15K steps. im getting taunted by my mates (who are mainly walking) for not matching their steps and it's bugging me that I should be closer to their count. Hope you can help.

This is a tricky one. Fitbit works on the basis that you only get steps when walking or running or otherwise stepping. It doesn't convert non stepping activities such as cycling into step equivalents. Basically, when riding a bike you shouldn't get any steps.

However, as you have found, you do get some steps due to the motion involved and this being misinterpreted as real steps.

Some people try to encourage this miscounting by attaching their fitbit to a shoe to exaggerate the motion and increase steps. However, these are false steps and give a random result to your calorie burn.

Hi Steve, thanks for the response. I thought there may be a way of manually adding them if necessary. Looks like I'll have to move my arm a bit more whilst riding or keep taking the insults from my friends 🙂

It is possible to manually add steps by logging a walk. Unfortunately manually logged steps will not count towards badges or challenges so there's not much point.

If the insults get too much I guess you could try taking the Blaze out of the strap and putting it in your sock.
