I am specifically using the Google Hangouts app, version 21.0.179146070. The messages are basically like text messages, but I can only clear all text notifications, as swiping right per https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Blaze/Extended-Notifications-for-Blaze/m-p/1557539 does not seem to do anything.
Blaze version: 8.402.1
fitbit firmware version: 17.8.402.1
fitbit app version: 2.45 (741)
iOS version: 9.3.5 (last available for Apple iPod Touch 5G)

The only way to clear a single notifacation is to place your finger on it and swipe it off the screen. I do this almost every day.

Thanks, @Rich_Laue. Apparently, it is possible to clear or acknowledge a single message by swiping from the far left to the far right; I was originally trying to swipe from the far right to the far left of the fitbit display.

Cool, I never thought about swiping left, yes just tried and a no go. Swiping right is not a natural motion when the tracker is on the right arm.
