I am in & out of atrial fibrillation & can track when I'm in Afib or sinus rhythm by the sleep data. If I'm in Afib, the Fitbit is unable to track a consistent heart rate so it will only show the basic sleep data. In sinus rhythm it displays the advanced sleep data because there is a consistent heart rate.

Welcome to the Fitbit Community @GMorrie. I am sorry for the delayed response.
I appreciate your participation in the Forums and sharing your experience with tracking your sleep. Fitbit estimates your sleep stages using a combination of your movement and heart-rate patterns. While you’re sleeping, your device tracks the beat-to-beat changes in your heart rate, known as heart rate variability (HRV), which fluctuate as you transition between light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep stages. As you mentioned correctly, if there is not enough information on the backend to calculate this, the basic sleep data will show which doesn’t require heart rate. For more information about tracking sleep and sleep stages, please see this help article: What should I know about sleep stages?
Best of luck with your health and wellness goals! I'll be around if you need further assistance.
