Step counter sensitive

For the first time since using the Blaze for over a year, the step counter did not reset to zero when I woke up in the morning. I always shut down the Blaze before going to bed. I re-started it 3 times but to no avail. Any clues will be appreciated.

Hi, @Waltzman45, since the most recent update to the Blaze, the clock no longer updates when the tracker is turned off, so that when you turn it back on, you need to sync the tracker first to update the clock.

While that is probably for most issues not a problem, it does mean that if you turn your Blaze off before midnight, and then turn it back on in the morning and sync it, the Blaze will have "jumped over" midnight -- if you see what I mean -- just as if you had changed time zones.  If the Blaze doesn't "see" midnight, then it never gets the signal to reset, and this is what happened to you.

Unfortunately, once this issue has occured (steps not resetting) a restart will not fix this issue or reset your steps.  The only "solution" is to wait until the next midnight when your steps will reset as normal.

For the future, to avoid this happening again, you should not turn off the Blaze when you go to bed -- unless you go to bed after midnight!

I am sorry not to have a better "solution" for you -- but at least you know there is nothing wrong with your Blaze and it is working as expected.  Welcome to the Community!

Thanks for your prompt response Julia_G, I see what you are saying. But I was just wondering why it happened for the first time. Like I said I have been turning off the Blaze before midnight every night before going to bed and the thing will reset the step to zero the following morning. I do this to save battery. Ok, I will follow your advice. But i will turn it off again one more time and see what happens.

Maybe it happened for the first time because your Blaze is getting tired from being restarted every single day?

@Waltzman45 and @MarkMM , this is new behaviour.  It was a change made in the recent update to the Blaze.

Am I missing something? Last firmware update I'm aware of was end of March. Yet there are new complaints on the forum.

@MarkMM, not everyone updates their trackers immediately, and not everyone shuts down every night.  Although steps not rolling over can have various causes, and these complaints you are seeing may be unrelated, in this case @Waltzman45 confirmed that his Blaze was shut down over midnight, and therefore it is overwhelmingly likely that this was the cause of the problem.

The notes on the March 2017 update contain this information:

"Important to note: A sync is required after a manual shutdown or a battery drain in order to show the correct time on Blaze. This is especially important for your activity tracked by Blaze because you'll want to make sure it's associated with the current date and time.". (copied from a post by the moderator in this thread.)

This is a change to previous behaviour from the Blaze, when the clock continued to update even when it was shut down.

@Waltzman45 if you want to experiment by shutting down your Blaze again, you could make a note of the time you turn it off, and when you turn it back on again, before you sync, check to see what the clock says.  If it says a time before midnight, and this is your only Fitbit, your steps will not be reset.  (Note, I do not know if the clock stops immediately on shutdown or just gradually loses time, so it might be interesting for you to report back your findings if you are willing to try the experiment.)

@Julia_G, now it's back to normal. I turned off the Blaze at exactly 10:18 pm before going to bed as I normally do for the last 14 months. 7:40 am when I woke up, turned it back on; as usual, the clock still shows the time from last night which is 10:18 pm and steps 16,830. I opened the app in my iphone which then syn.ced the Blaze automatically - and there it is, the clock shows the correct time and steps set to zero. Thanks to you and everyone who shared their insights and input

hi, @Waltzman45, thank you so much for sharing that information!  The clock used to update when it was turned off (prior to the March update), so the previous 14 months isn't really relevant, just the past 5 weeks at most...

So even though the clock didn't update, and when you turned it back on it "jumped over" midnight to get to the right time, your steps still reset!  That is very interesting.  I wonder how it got the signal to reset -- and why it didn't get the signal the other night when your steps didn't reset... It's a bit of a mystery.

Please post again if you have further experience of this.

ok @Julia_G. I couldn't agree with you more that it's a mystery. I will surely post if that issue re-occur (I hope not) .

@Waltzman45, right after I responded to you I saw that another user posted he turned his Blaze off and his steps didn't reset.  A couple of days ago I saw a different posts from another person mentioned that he turned his off and it didn't reset.

So I am pretty sure that it is related, but sometimes -- the system works even with the clock not updating, and sometimes it doesn't.  So I very much look forward to any further reports from you.
