Says I need an internet connection to update, I am on a smartphone with Wi-Fi so there is internet.  Why won't it update

When you do a sync or an update it moves data between the fitbit and the fitbit servers. So, you need bluetooth to connect the phone to the fitbit and you also need internet access to connect to the fitbit servers.
