Am I able to take the module out of the frame, stick it in a pocket and have it track at least steps? Or will that not work due to it being designed for wrist tracking?

It will track steps just fine. In fact, I found that its more accurate.

Calories may be out though as the leg moves more than the arm when walking/running. I haven't got a clue what the calories associated with cylcling will look like compared to reality.
