Workout calories reading much too low

I really think my Fitbit is drastically underestimating the calories I am burning during my very intense workouts. For example my elliptical (which may be overshooting it) tells me when I'm doing 15 minutes of high intensity interval training in it in burning over 500 calories. My Fitbit says 98?!?! I also have other very challenging workouts reading very low calories when I'm certain I am burning twice that. Anybody have a solution? If I manually input my workouts and calories wouldn't I have to take the Fitbit off so it doesn't double going my active minutes;( it'd be so lame to have to take it off to workout. But it won't let me manually input calories into the workouts it logged me doing. HELP!

Calorie burn is based on heart rate, start by reading these wearing tips:

Aria, Fitbit MobileTrack on iOS. Previous: Flex, Force, Surge, Blaze
