This is a terrible product for the price. Step count is incredibly inaccurate. I did some tests, wore both it and my Garmin on my dominant hand as I use a cane in the non-dominant hand and the step count was around 8000 on the Fitbit and 5000 on the Garmin. It counted my eating as steps plus who knows what else. Wore it on the non-dominant hand, both of them at night. Garmin counted 45 steps to the bathroom and back, Fitbit counted 386. What's that about? Rolling over in bed? If I bike outdoors (or in for that matter), and am using the bike exercise feature it logs the biking as steps too. It should be smart enough to figure out that if I am biking I am not taking steps at the same time! The only way to get a reasonably accurate step count is if I keep it in my pocket like I did with my old Fitbit Zip (which I wish was still made as that is all I use this for). Granted there is a significant price differential, but if you want a product that is accurate get a Garmin and skip the Fitbit. The only Fitbit has over Garmin is the app is better. My Garmin tracks my sleep in line with sleep studies I have had, but the Fitbit very different results. They finally got the GPS feature fixed but now it is draining the battery big time and I have to charge it everyday, even when not using that aspect of it. It should know to put the GPS to sleep if you are not doing an exercise activity as there is no way to manually do that, and why would one want to have to remember to turn the GPS feature on and off anyway? I am so disappointed in this product.

The Fitbit doesn't actually count steps, it counts activity of the wrist which is vigorous enough to cause it to register on the accelerometer.

I know that but they can improve the algorithms used to filter out random movements. Garmin is far superior to that and does not pick up nearly as much of the random stuff. They should not call it "steps" then! But they have everyone thinking they do far more walking than they are because of their highly inaccurate way of tracking. There is really no excuse for this.

I actually haven't encountered any overcounting such as you report.

Mine is pretty accurate - I haven't noticed any over-counting such as you report either. @ElanorG maybe yours is faulty and you should take it up with customer support.
