Through a random google I think I have discovered the (Fitbit’s) secret to getting a sleep score on my Charge 5.
I have simply moved the device a bit further up my arm, allowing room for 2 or 3 fingers between it and the wrist bone. And I’ve stopped tapping ‘begin sleep now’ when I’ve gone to bed, just letting the device work it out for itself.
I have had sleep scores, and all the other metrics, logged for the last three nights.
Hopefully it continues. It seems too easy a fix. Fingers are crossed!

Should never use "Begin Sleep Now" with current devices. That is only for older devices that did not have heart rate sensors, also can be used for naps that you know will not be detected because less than an hour. "Begin sleep now" prevents getting sleep stages.

That’s really interesting. I had no idea. And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
thanks!

That used to be somewhere in the Help section. I'm not sure it's still there after some re-writings but I think still true. But I agree, should be better advertised - just let fitbit do all the work. But as I said, I will use it to get credit for short naps, recognizing I won't get any stages from them.
