How to quickly hook up charger?

When I hook up the charger, it often does not vibrate nor show the 'charging' screen. I had to move the charger around searching for the right position to hook it up. And, the 'charging' screen flashes and disappears quickly, leaving me wonder if the charger stays hooked up.  I have two questions,

1. Is there a simple way to hook the charger up?

2. Is there a way to confirm that charging activitity is on? 

I have a Charge 5.
