With my old Charge HR, I could long-press the button to view the battery level (%age) . I haven't been able to find a way to see the battery level on the Charge 5 - is there one? (I want to see it on the device itself while I am wearing it, not in the app or while charging.)

Yes there is a way.
From the home screen (clock face) scroll up once and you should see the Day and Date and more detailed stats, but at the very top of that screen there's a little icon with a battery, showing the level in green and a percentage in numbers written next to it. It's very small so easy to miss if you're not looking for it. At least that's the case on mine.
I hope that helps.

The text of the batter meter is so small, it needs to be it's own panel/screen in a future update!

Agreed! My aging eyes didn’t even notice it before being told where to look and, even then, I cannot read it.
