I am thinking of upgrading from an inspire 2 to a charge 5 at Xmas. I find wearing the Fitbit on my wrist uncomfortable and as I work with animals it’s impractical as it just gets in the way. I usually wear it on my bicep with a new strap I bought. Does the charge 5 have to be worn on the wrist for best use or can I wear it higher up? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Fitbit community, @eddycurrent!
To check Fitbit's recommendations on how to wear your Charge 5 please hav a look here:
I'm skeptical if wearing your device on your upper arm will give you correct step tracking as arm movement in this section is not as extensive as on your wrist. Also i doubt there will be reliable, if any, heart rate tracking this way.
