When going for a run, is there a way start the run log within the app so the Charge 5 will recognize the start of the run or do I have to start both on the Charge 5 and within the app?  I need the app for audible alerts on distance.

If you are already getting audible alerts, there's arrow in red circle to start run right there where you specify audible alerts.

Okay, but will the Run function within the app ultimately start the Run function on the Charge 5?

Not sure I understand your question, but

I don't think it will actually start Run on device, but there is no reason for it to do so.  I believe it will still get logged as a Run just as if you had recorded it from the Fitbit.

If you want to try it out, just fake start a Run for phone while you are at home doing anything.  Wait 10 or 15 minutes, then 'stop" to "run", and see the resulting logged workout.  It you want to get rid of it, then you can delete the workout.

P.S. Perhaps to further clarify, recording this way will use the data recorded by the Fitbit in the exercise log just as if you had started it on your wrist.
