Private Challenges

Obviously I know those were removed for open challenges but someone I know created a private group challenge. I am unable to find the challenge but today I got a "pat is sneaking up on you" alert that showed the current challenge progress. But I can't find that challenge any other way.  How can I see the challenge without an alert?  Just another poor decision by Google.

My understanding is the challenges are hidden. I know of someone who can still access the challenges only of they receive a notification. I turned mine off as they were becoming a distraction, so sadly I cannot access my challenges.
