While hiking I have to stop and continually rotate my wrist to read the heart rate and it takes a while before it gets an accurate reading. By then, my heart rate is already decreasing.
Can Charge 5 with current software be set to give real time measurements while exercising?

@azgoodwin I hope I can help you. There are two different controls for the Always On Display (AOD), one for the general clock/screen function and one in each exercise shortcut settings. Make sure you have the right AOD on. For hiking and before you start:
Once you start your hike, there is a top middle, and bottom stat. For hike, I suspect the top is distance and the bottom is elapsed time. You swipe/tap on the middle stat to scroll through several real time stats. Your heart rate is one of them. As long as you don't tap/swipe again, your heart rate should be there in a dimmed state (AOD does this).
If you run and want this same feature, you need to do the same thing in the Run shortcut.
I'm confident this will work for you. Charge 5 manual -- Exercise and Heart Health

Hi, @azgoodwin, welcome to the community, you may find this article of use How do I track heart rate with my Fitbit device? I'm not sure what the sampling rate is for the Charge 5 but you can choose a watch face with "Always on" (have a look at "Slashed" which has both of these features)
I hope this helps, let us know how you get on.
Cheers

@azgoodwin I use the Runliner watch face since it shows the heart rate. Also, if you put your Charge 5 in exercise mode before your hike/workout (swipe right to left 2x), you can tap on the screen to scroll through the viewable options. One of the options is heart rate, which will show your real time heart rate during your hike/workout. Check out this page which lists the different stats you can see in the Exercise mode: How to track workouts with Fitbit

Slashed doesn't stay on - maybe a problem with my Charge 5?

Always on doens't seem to work and with the heart rate showing in exercise mode it still doesn' stay on and give me real time heart rate.
I may be returning this charge this week.
