I run with a friend who used a Garmin, I use a Fitbit Charge 5. The distance total from the Fitbit is always about 1 mile longer than the Garmin. We run the same route, times are same. Why is the distance so off?

Not fair, or meaning to take this frustration out on you personally, @chieflaz , but I get so frustrated by questions about distance accuracy without giving any indication which, of several possible methods, users are measuring the distance.
The main difference is using GPS or not, which use 2 totally different ways of getting distance.
Then, within GPS, there are different options. For the Charge 5, you could be connecting to your phone's GPS (connected GPS), built-in GPS, or Dynamic, which could use phone or built-in GPS.

i am set for dynamic, he didn’t have his phone with him, I was just wondering why the mileage was so far off, I have Fitbit and strava apps and they show different also but only a very small amount. Fitbit measures stride length, could that be the difference? don’t get frustrated, I know there is more important things in the world
