I have had a Charge 5 for over two years and never had problems with using multiple bands. I bought a Charge 6 on Amazon and I couldn't put it on without the band falling off one end (always the same end). I tried several other bands that worked fine with the Charge 5 and they all fell off just trying to put it on. I returned it and ordered another one. This one seemed okay, but after two hours wearing it with the factory band, the band fell off again.
Is this a general issue or have I just had bad luck twice in a row?

Since the band that came with your Charge 6 is not staying connected, that indicates to me that there's an issue with the connector on your device.
You should contact Support (<-- click link) and let them know. Complete the prompts until you get the option to chat or call.
Please don't wait too long to contact Support. I've read posts where the user lost their Fitbit due to a defective connector on the device.
