Charge 6 Gmail sync issue

Just got my Charge 6 yesterday and am liking it so far. One weird issue- my e-mail notifications on the Charge 6 don't appear until I manually open Gmail on my phone which makes it kind of pointless. Once I open Gmail then my watch vibrates and I get several notifications. Gmail is the only synched email / default.
