Getting up in the night

Fitbit, thinks my night is over when I get up in the night to pee. Apparently walking makes it think i'm done sleeping. It could be easily programmed to discount any time that I'm out of bed that's less than five minutes. Almost everyone gets up in the night and needs to walk to a bathroom, and maybe to a kitchen to get a drink of water, before going back to bed. Maybe some people get up at 3 o'clock in the morning and stay up, but there unusual. The usual pattern is to get up at 3 or 4 go to the bathroom maybe get a drink of water and go back to bed. Easy fix. Activity in the middle of the night, that lasts less than five minutes just doesn't register as sleep time over.

I suspect there's a more direct way (and since my sleep timing is working even with reading after waters break)

  • open Fitbit app
  • tap the Sleep section (where you get the hours/minutes on the front page)
  • tap the vertical three dots menu in upper right corner
  • tap Sleep Settings

Now you can enter the idea of your sleep period -- when you would usually expect to go to bed, when you nominally would get up.

This doesn't have to be accurate -- I have very bad habits of moving the times around from day to day, and it still picks up my actual sleep nearly always.

One thing to be aware of is that it subtracts 'awake' time from total, when you get to the morning reports, and may not be accurate about being awake, though my understanding of sleep is that we actually are very near or awake often enough when we feel we've been sleeping,

It does something similar for naps other times in the day, if you take one, and there it doesn't distinguish more than awake (restless) and sleeping, fof a low result personally, anyway. Though, naps....I generally try to avoid them.....
