New Charge 6 step count ridiculously inaccurate

I just received a new Charge 6 two days ago and I'm very frustrated with the inaccurate step count.

Yesterday I wore it all day with the fitness tracker it is replacing, after 4 hours, old device was at 1286, Charge 6 was at 5680 steps.

Today I'm wearing both Charge 6 and an old Charge 2.  After 4 hours, Charge 2 is at 1332, Charge 6 is at 6670.

I can't find any options to calibrate this thing and have no idea why its so sensitive (it has added 46 steps while sitting at my desk typing this).

Support chat told me to set the stride length, which is not a solution.  Should I just return this?  I have not been checking the other metrics, I don't think I can trust this device at all.

Star55, and anyone else who seems to be having an excessive number of steps on their fitbit - Did you happen to add your phone as a device in the fitbit app? I think that doing that might cause double-counting steps anytime you are carrying your phone. I think that option is just there so you can use a phone INSTEAD of a fitbit device for step counting.

I have just bought a charge 6 and am having the exact same issue.  I bought the 6 as the 5 was doing the same.. adding steps.. I thought that it was because it was old. Clearly the 6 is no better and it is new !!

 Please share final solution 🙏

Hello @HBev

By any chance, do you have your phone as a connected device in your Fitbit app? You can check by clicking the device icon in the upper left of the Today page. If you see Phone listed under Devices along with your Charge 6, then this could be the reason why you're seeing additional steps.

To remove your phone as a connected device, tap on the Phone tile and follow the prompts to remove it. Removing your phone as a connected device won't affect syncing between your Charge 6 and the Fitbit app.

Also try to be cognitive of these steps on the app that might be their prior to you actually syncing it to your watch. I was having that issue as well would be charging my Fitbit and would have zero steps on the charger but when I open the app, the app would already have 2000 or 3000 steps.. but definitely the solution above. Prior to this, though you could have your phone connected and it wouldn’t be a problem with steps but for some reason now it’s an issue. I had to return my Fitbit charge six twice. and to be honest, it’s still not perfect. I bought an Apple Watch.. and I always prefer Fitbit

Yeah I agree this might be the problem but the issue I have with that is that all of the previous charged devices that I had and I’ve had a charged device since charge two and that never was an issue. I never wanted to, but I just bought an Apple Watch And said forget it. I was tired of it. I had to send the watch back twice because they were showing steps on the app for my watch said zero steps on it while it was on the charger and they couldn’t resolve it

My brand new charger 6 is stating 7961 steps and Fitbit app is showing 8173.  Please fix this issue.  Ran into the same problem last year.   Maybe quality control department should include new charger 6 as routine testing.

Does anyone get help from fitbit.  My charge 6 has been giving crazy numbers for over a week now. I've tried EVERYTHING,  nothing is working.

Hello @Flower2power

Are you seeing a high number of steps on your Charge 6 or in the Fitbit app?

Do you do any activities that involve using your arms a lot?

We've resent them multiple times. It's been going on for over a week now!

Hello @Flower2power

Thank you for letting us know that you and your husband are seeing the high step count in the Fitbit app.

Please check in your Fitbit app to see if you have your phone as a connected device.

  • Tap the device icon in the upper left of the Fitbit app
  • On Connected to Fitbit page that opens, look at section titled Devices. You should see a tile for the Charge 6. If you see a tile titled Phone that means your phone is also connected to the Fitbit app.
  • Tap on Phone and follow the prompts to remove your phone as a connected device.

The Fitbit app has a feature that allows you to track your steps & workouts with your phone when you're not wearing your Fitbit device. Some users have reported that having this feature enabled resulted in an overage of steps since both their Fitbits and their phone were tracking their steps.

Just to reassure you, you don't need to have your phone as a connected device to the Fitbit app. You will still get your tracked data when you sync your Fitbit device with the app.

Got my charge 6 for my birthday 2 days ago. The step count is ridiculous!!

I move 15 steps and it counts of 60.

Have tried:
Resetting the device, taking the software update, removing my phone sync from the app to avoid double counting, it's on my non dominant wrist, I've adjusted the stride length, I've done every trouble shooting thing I can find online or think of and the steps are SO much higher than the actual number. Do I give up and see if my husband can return it for a refund?? So so disappointing.

uninstall on Bluetooth, then reinstall on Bluetooth.

Did this with no luck. Husband returned it for a refund and I got an inspire 3 instead. Hopefully less issues!
