Sleep won't capture; can't manually log sleep

On fitbit app, android, charge 6

Attempting to log sleep manually error comes up, "Can't save sleep session" "A sleep has already been logged in this time period."

However no sleep period shows, neither on the watch or app

I have tried the classic:

Log out

Turn off bluetooth

Force stop app

Restart watch

Turn off phone for 2 minutes

Turn on phone, bluetooth, log in, resync

As well as lesser versions of this. The fitbit almost never has an issue tracking sleep; the exception is when I take my watch off within 5 minutes or so of waking. Then it never will show me the data. The data must be there and that's why it's not letting me manually log it.

Hello @FitTravis

Sorry to see that you're having problems with trying to manually log your sleep.

Have you had a chance to clear the cache for the Fitbit app on your phone?

Another place to look for your sleep data is the on-line fitbit.com dashboard. If you're on a computer or tablet, you should see "Dashboard" at the top of the forum page between Help & Store.

  • Click on Dashboard to open the page
  • Click on Log to open the page
  • Click on Sleep to open the page
  • On this page, you'll see your synced sleep logs. You should be able to see if there's a log for the time in question as well as manually enter your sleep
  • To delete a log, click on the arrow to the right of the log. This will open to that specific sleep log. On the right, you will see a place where you can delete the log and change the sleep start/wake times

I had this same issue and tried your solution several times. I can see there is sleep data logged for a date that isn’t showing in the app. However, there isn’t an arrow for me to click to the right of the log. There’s nothing but a star at the top of the date. Do you have another solution?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread….I’m having this problem today so I tried a browser login on my tablet but it only prompts me to use the app. Any other ideas?

As you can see I never did get any more tips on how to fix this. It’s happened a couple times since and I still haven’t solved it.

Hello @AltaRAnderson & @BethSquared

The on-line Fitbit.com dashboard was still available when I provided those steps. The web dashboard was discontinued last year (2024).

Please provide some additional details on the problem you're seeing and what troubleshooting steps you've tried so that we don't repeat those.

My apologies if you've already reviewed the information & tried the troubleshooting steps on this help page: How do I track my sleep with my Fitbit (<-- click link)

I'm sorry that I didn't see your post and that no one replied to you. I'll do my best to help you.

I followed all the steps in your original reply. I still couldn’t log my sleep manually. I got the same warning that it couldn’t be logged because one already existed. It has done it 2x since my post in June of last year. It’s not a regular thing….it seems to happen once in awhile.

I think I never found a way to get a detailed sleep log. I was able to
delete the woefully inadequate sleep log that was automatically there and
manually insert a new log. In this way the app showed that I had been
sleeping but none of the details. And I never received a sleep score.
Recently I had another issue like that and I was able to do the same thing
through the app. They have changed the interface to be able to fix this
through the app. I'm not sure about the details of your problem but to my
experience once it fails to capture your sleep properly, you will never
recover it.

Hello @AltaRAnderson

When you get a message that you can't edit the log because one already exists, go back to the previous day's Sleep page & see if there's a log for that time under Additional Sleep.

I recently had a similar problem where I couldn't edit my sleep log for the same reason - a sleep log already existed. But, I couldn't see it on the Today's Sleep page. It finally dawned on me that I should check the previous day's Sleep page. And there it was! After I deleted that one, I was able to edit my log and get my full sleep tracking.

Hello @FitTravis

Like you, I've had to delete an entire sleep log and enter a new one with the correct start & wake times. Usually, it takes a bit of time for the algorithms to use the new data and update my sleep tracking, with score & sleep graphs. Sometimes, though, I only get the basic sleep graphs.

Absolute genius, at least in my case. My sleep logged the day before. 🤦🏼‍:female_sign:
