Upgrading from Charge 3 not working

I just received a Charge 6 to replace my old Charge 3 that stopped working a couple of months ago. In order to switch. When I try to add the device it asks if I want to replace the Charge 3. When I say "yes" it says I have to move to a google account. I figure that's no problem, I've had a gmail account for 17 years. When I enter my google account name, I get this message: "Can't use fitbit with this google account. This could be because you're using a google workspace account, or because your account is supervised".

In my case, i am not using a google workspace account, i've never even heard of it. My account is also not supervised. The app doesn't isn't giving me any options to resolve the issue. Any ideas on how this can be resolved?

here are the support contacts I've gleaned over the years on the forums.

when there is someone available, chat is an option. Phone or X/Twitter works well, too.
