Can watchface developers steal data without users realizing?

As there's not much variety in the watch faces offered by Fitbit, I wanted to use watch faces developed by third party developers. When I looked into the developer portal (fitbit studio) I see the following options available to them

Location (may use GPS);
Internet (Companion may communicate with the internet using your phone data connection);
Run in background (Companion may run even when the application is not actively in use);

Is it possible that a rogue developer can steal sensitive data from phone using companion/watch without even us realizing by making their program run in background and send data through internet?

Thanks

Hi there @rmadras, welcome to the Community Forums.

For future references, with third party apps, note that Fitbit doesn't own or maintain third party integrations. It's up to the owner of the third party app to implement or update features for their app so in this case is recommendable to contact the third party developer to learn more about future implementations.

To contact the developer please open their app on the Fitbit App Gallery, scroll/swipe down and under "App Details" you will find the information.

Please note that users can build any type of app, in accordance with Fitbit’s App Gallery guidelines, ranging from new clock faces to different types of exercise apps. Information from the watch's heart-rate sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, and GPS are all available to use.

The app is evaluated for its content and quality using our App Gallery Guidelines. Once the app is approved, it becomes available to all users through the App Gallery. For more information on the submission process, see https://dev.fitbit.com/.

So what is the answer. Can a third party clock face steel charge/credit card information from Fitbit? Asking the third party if this is possible is like asking the guy who just drank a 12 pack of beer if he’s ok to drive. And of course his answer is yes. What if any protections does Fitbit/Google have in place.
