Calories Left calculation incorrect

Hi, Smiley Happy

I recently purchased a Fitbit Alta HR, which I have been happy with until I set a weight loss goal. I set the goal to 1kg loss per week, which I know requires a 1000 cal deficit per day to be met. However, it seems to only be calculating around a 380 calorie deficit per day. It is frustrating as if I abide by what the app is recommending, I will absolutely not meet my goal.

I have seen other posts on this same topic going a couple of years, but it still does not seem to be fixed. As an example, my log currently tells me I have eaten 708 calories, and burned 1968, which is correct, and puts me in a 1260 deficit. This to me would indicate I can only eat another 260 cals to stay on track for my 1kg goal, but it tells me I have 876 calories left for my daily intake. Does anyone know if anything is being done about this or is there something I am missing here? At the moment, I am logging my meals and just doing the calculations myself, which is pretty disappointing.

Fitbit does a lot of estimating. It also ALWAYS takes into consideration your BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate) of approximately 1 calorie per minute - mine is 1.2, or 72 calories an hour.

So, as a minimum it is calculating the difference you already recognize and adding the remaining BMR calories between the current time and midnight.

Check out your calculated calorie burn while you are asleep. That value, which is 18 calories per 15 minute block of time for me, is pretty much your BMR.

Then see see if the “calories left” value makes more sense.
