The fit bit syncs with my computer but when I go to the dashboard the program to check how many steps it gives me the following message "there porting period has ended" What does that mean?

That is very strange, that error message shouldn't be showing up.
I'd like to take a closer look into it. Could you take a screen shot and then post it here as a reply? That will let me visualize the situation and find the best way forward.
In the meantime, I'd recommend that you try to uninstall and then reinstall the software. That should help it run smoothly once again.
