Any Tips for Running at Night?

Hey guys, so I've been starting the Couch to 5k program and I've been running in the evening because its easier and it's much cooler in the evening. I do run in well lit areas fyi. I was wondering if any of you have some tips or advice about running in the evening.

1) Wear a head lamp or flashing reds
2) Know your area very well
3) Try to buddy run (I don't like leaving my subdivision alone at night - OK, I'm a guy but I'm 66 also)
4) Try to avoid places where there are no lights
5) Carry protection (even if it is a spray can)

I run really early in the morning on weekends, so it's sometimes dark then too.  It does have fewer skeevy people than at night, but it also has fewer people all around, which can be creepy too.

I try to make eye contact with people that I see, and maybe even say Hi to them.  I know it might sound strange, but it makes people a little more hesitant to mess with you if they're on the fence about it.  You appear more confident, and they know that you know exactly what they look like.  They'd prefer messing with someone that is a little less likely to fight back or recognize them.

That said, I would carry pepper spray (if it's legal where you are) and practice using it before you need it.  Also, wear reflective clothing (which is super easy to find now).  Let people know exactly where you are going and when to expect you back.  I also have a RoadID bracelet which has my name, date of birth, pertinent medical information, and the phone numbers to my boyfriend and a friend that lives in my town.  It's a great idea for when you can't speak for yourself.
