When I was active with my walking I definitely was! I lost 7 pounds in a couple weeks and kept it off. I also noticed some slight changes in definiton in my legs. I found that wanting to walk daily motivated me to be more active in other ways too, so I ended up at the gym taking yoga classes and bicycling a ton.
I'm hoping to get back to that point! Once again, starting off with just walking.

How are you measuring this?

Definitely. Three months ago I was recovering from my second surgery in two months and was physically not in a good place. Since then, I've lost 10 lbs, and my fitness and stamina are improving all the time. I am currently starting to train for a sprint triathlon in May, and this is something I would not have considered a year ago when I was sick.
Setting simple goals, like x number of steps a day, then competing with yourself to see how much more you can do is the best measure of improving fitness. By tracking the improvements you will see how much stronger you are becoming.
Hope this helps.

Definitely. Nine months ago, I could hardly run for more than 2 minutes in a row. Now (9 kg/10 lbs lighter) I can comfortably run for an hour at about 6.7 mph. "Lifetime" (= 9 mth) achievement: 5.6M steps, 20.2K floors.
