AuGUST August 2023 -- Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

The end of summer looms and there are only a few more weeks for a getaway or two before we move into fall. In terms of goals, you still have to get in your steps, but in this most distinguished of months try adding something special, maybe a group run or ride, or a hike to the tallest/highest place wherever you are.                                      

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format    
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

The theme this month is August, which besides being the eighth month means consecrated, venerable, majestic, impressive, honored. So look for pictures that invoke those feelings. Possibilities might be monuments, historic buildings, the oldest, grandest tree in your area, or wide land- or sky-scapes during sunrise or sunset. With the right instagram filter, even the faded street art marking the B&O train museum is august.

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Sorry for being so absent. It has been a very difficult month that was suppose to be the best.  We traveled to Maui to see my daughter even though I HATE flying.  Well.... from the get go there were issues, we finally arrived a day later from delays, and Maui is just INCREDIBLE. We were able to enjoy the beach staying in Kihei the first day and a half, anticipating many trips to Lahaina. Well, Not only did we get very sick on the Road to Hana, the fires happened in Lahaina 😞  We are lucky that we were 20 miles away, but it was very hard for the people of Maui. Still very sick (found out much later it was COVID!) we trekked onward, beaches, visiting my daughter, etc. Some wonderful times but few and far between. The trip home had all sorts of delays and issues, but we finally kissed the ground here in Central Illinois. All that being said, I had to make several changes to my week (sorry for the book, there's a lot more, but you know...tmi) At least we had some wonderful moments and times and we were there to comfort our daughter. Prayers for Maui!

How about volunteer trail repairs and removing obstructions along the trails? I get most of my exercise doing volunteer work, trained by the U. S. Forest Hot Shots teams, Little T, Del Rosa, Bear Divide, we get our safety training and keep trails open. 🙂 

Wish we had real challenges, this blog is pointless and silly, not like the old days. The new owners screwed it up, challenges made Fitbit useful, now pretending that blog postings are a suitable replacement is typical corporate stupidity. alas.

Hey @DamOTclese -- how's that volunteer trail repair work? Does someone coordinate it where you live and call people out? Or do you have a particular area you agree to be responsible for?  Along those lines, there is a elevated walkway in Baltimore that was affected by storms earlier this month. Pic below. I went through this morning and someone, probably from the county forestry department but maybe a volunteer like you, has cleared it out. I'm always appreciative to those who help keep the trails open and make it easier for the rest of us to get out and enjoy them. Thanks!
