What device do you have, one with GPS?
If not, all the Fitbit can do is see steps, and calculate distance from that walking or running pattern.
Even if you started a workout for cycling, it has no idea the distance you went.
You were not walking or running though - therefore the formula for distance from steps is totally bogus and useless when doing anything else.
If you want to use the Exercise Diary for review later, say to compare workouts and see if the timing for same distance is faster, or HR is lower, or whatever - Edit the Activity Record that is there that contains your HR info (and steps & distance), and put some stats in the description or notes regarding true distance of the ride, perhaps a common route name to truly compare later.

I am not sure it is a diary per se, it is the history of your activities. if you click on the day tile it will bring you to activities and you can see everything that you started or was auto captured. if you click into the activity it will give you stats about it. I think for you, starting the activity will be beneficial so you can see exactly what you did. go to your exercise app on your tracker, pick the activity and click start.
