Bone Contusion: Staying Fit

Dear Community,

23 Yrs Old and an avid runner + strength training was part of my routine for years.

In June, following a hiking trip I suffered a Bone Contusion of my Foot: Tarso Metarsal Joint

Yoga, Cycling, Free Weights, Occasional Youtube Pilates Video have been keeping me going.

Its now been 3 months and sometimes I wonder will it ever heal, it is difficult for me to walk far or at all at times.

Healthy eating and shakes have kept me in balance, however I have still gained 3 lbs. I know this is a minimal amount, however can we all relate to keeping fit and doing our best to stayin on track.

Looking for advice to keep my cardio going + weight in range.

P.S. no regular pool access to swim laps.

Not a big weight gain yet, I do fear it getting worse and I want to stay in control.

Please help me stay on track! Looking for good ideas

Can you tell us how you got the contusion? Was it sudden like spraining an ankle or was it a gradual onset?

My general rule with joint pain is to reduce exercising at the first onset of the pain. This prevents it from getting worse and in the long run, I can do more exercising. In your case, this would mean no running and minimum walking. It may take several months to heal, and if you try to rush it you may have to start over.

Perhaps this is a good time to start a weight lifting program or a core exercise program. Avoid any exercises that cause foot pain. Unfortunately, it's difficult to use enough calories to keep the weight down if you are not walking or running, so you will have to cut back on the calories.

A vegan diet can speed healing. Also, avoid ALL added sugars and additives. For more information on this I suggest reading Scott Jurek's "Eat and Run" and also "The Starch Solution" by Dr. McDougall. If you follow Dr. McDougall's diet, you will find it easy to keep the weight off and you will likely have more energy. Your results may vary.

I wish I could be more encouraging on the time to recover. If you don't rush it, you WILL recover and afterwards your feet will be stronger.
