Community Blog: How to stay healthy during COVID-19

Staying Connected Amidst a Pandemic - Ted Jenkins

It's hard to find ways to stay healthy in a "community" sort of way during the pandemic. I mean, sure, I can (and have) gone out into my garage in the mornings and pumped out some lonely reps of pushups or Bulgarian squats. But, man, I miss the interaction with others, especially extended family members.

Enter the Virtual Relay: It's something my extended family is trying this weekend. There are about 20 of us, all living in different parts of the world. We've randomly divided up into four teams of five, and each team has determined a "run" order. (By "run" we mean run/walk/swim--whatever means of locomotion we favor.) At a set time, the first person on each team will start their "run" in the app, and "run" for 1 mile, wherever they live. At the end of their mile, they will end their "run" in the app, and notify their team's second "runner", either via the app or a text message. And so on, and so on. When all members of all teams have run, whichever team has the shortest cumulative duration, wins!

We're going to try it as a way to have fun, be safe, and still feel connected! I'll let you know how it goes!

Using the Pandemic for Personal Motivation - Jody Charles

COVID-19 is my chance to get fit, I have challenged myself to a squat challenge, starting at 30 squats and adding 10 more each day. Also, making sure that I am walking at least 40 minutes every day, eating healthy, and drinking 8 glasses of water each day. So far I have been doing well and on Saturday I added another 62-minute walk in the afternoon. It’s surprising that my legs hurt the first few days, and now they just feel tight. Always much better after a hot bath.

Since the pandemic started I  have gained 50+ LBS and h.c ad a heart attack.  I'm 61,  disabled, 15 surgeries. I live by myself with my dog and try to stay away from everyone because of the pandemic. I don't know if this is the right place to ask the question but I used to be a Fitbit member and enjoyed it. Right now I can't walk more than 30 to 40  steps am out of breath and need to sit down. I guess my question is is it bit know anything about easing into something or you just have to be 10,000 steps exactly 20000 shut up where we can go gangbusters for and have another heart attack. I'm getting quite depressed from Fitbit as they tried to push me and push me and push me.

The primary thing that has been affected the most during this lockdown has been our mental health. With so much uncertainty, fear and deaths all around, this pandemic has adversely affected our collective mental healths. I personally have had to face anxiety and depression during this time. Thankfully, I found this magical herb that has really helped me with my mental health and has allowed me to restore my sanity during this period.
