Taking 10,000 Steps a Day, BeFITTing for Moms - Tameshia Wilson-Gumbs

Six years ago, I gave birth to a healthy baby girl and it has been challenging to get the baby weight plus the extra fluctuating pounds off.  When I served active duty in the Navy, I was in good shape and was well-adapted at sustaining a healthy lifestyle. Even when I gained weight during the cold seasons, I was always successful at shedding those extra pounds in the spring season. I credit my success during those days as a hospital corpsman working in naval dental facilities as a dental hygienist to the popular South Beach Diet. Since I dislike the term “diet,” I prefer to call it the South Beach lifestyle or plan. I wrote this blog not to promote the Miami cardiologist’s invention but to share my experiences as a wife, mother desiring to lose weight, gain back my military career goals all while maintaining my nurturing role as a mom.

The 10,000 steps a day challenge has always been intriguing to me. In years past, I never kept it up for more than a week or two. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I decided to retry taking extra steps a day to reclaim my physical fitness lifestyle. Keep in mind that you may not attain 10,000 steps in one walking/jogging session. I usually clock in between 5,000-7,000 steps from walking an hour. Before becoming a mom, I did a little bit of everything to stay fit. Of course, I jogged with my navy command unit as a personal way to stay fit beyond the mandated group runs that are set for military members. I managed to either jog, attend cycle classes, roller skate, and participate in other cardiovascular activities on my own schedule.

As a mom, it’s not always easy to get up and do those aforementioned activities when all you want to do when you come home from work is tend to your child or children, eat, and sleep. Fast forward from 2014 to 2020 along with a pandemic, I have decided to take advantage of the extra time away from the busyness of achieving the American dream and walk at least 5 days a week at dawn. Another important aspect of losing weight and keeping it off is partaking in a well-balanced healthy eating plan.  Once again, I dislike “diets” and prefer life-long plans. I ensure I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water. Everyone has their preference as to how they pursue health. I advocate for every mom in whatever stage in their motherhood whose trying their best to take smaller steps to achieve their goal.

Great blog.   I think you are doing a great job being a mum and you should take your own advice and take small steps to achieve your goal.

I had a little laugh reading that you managed to either jog, attend cycle classes, roller skate, and participate in other cardiovascular activities on your own schedule before becoming a mum.  You certainly kept busy.   You can still do these things not all at once but you can enjoy having a little jog with your daughter, go with her on a bike ride, roller skate holding her hand that would all be classed as cardiovascular activity. Don't forget all the other tasks you carry out every day besides being at work, cooking, cleaning, washing, taking care of your husband and daughter etc.

You have just made me remember soo many things that my husband and I did with our two sons and our daughter {now 46, 43 and 39}.  We all loved going on long bike rides, having picnics and visiting different parks, playing games and having fun, going out every weekend and camping at various campsites .  Enjoy your child, eat and drink sensibly and do things that you enjoy.  Make time for yourself, relax and be grateful for each and every day.  Sending you a large pat on your back, you are doing great.
