fit bit is a great way to track running etc- but today I rowed (Concept 2) for 20 minutes at high intensity (level 8- amost 5000 meters). Fit bit showed 20 minutes of high intensity but no steps and hardly any calorie burn (and indoor rowing is one of the most complete and high calorie burn workouts there is).
With Ellipticals it seems pretty good (was on the elliptical for 25 minutes just after) and it almost matched the "distance recorded" (in terms of steps - exactly. Notice the same during my intense boot camp workout (dumbells)- records high intensity (green) but low number of "steps" and low calorie burn.
Wonder if anyone else has noticed this

I found the same. My work around is to synch to My Fitness Pal and enter the legth of time and intensity level of rowing on stationary equipment there and the calorie burn is recorded on the FItbit app.

You most assuredly should, the FAQ says to.
But, I'd suggest using Fitbit's exercise database, as it has more levels of intensity for several workouts than MFP has.
Like elliptical isn't step based, so manually log it.
Rowing has speed to enter in, so a better custom calorie burn based on your pace. Or manually log how many calories the machine said you burned, if you input your weight in to it.
Help the next searcher of answers, mark a reply as Solved if it was, or a thumbs up if it was a good idea too.

When I use my Concept 2 rower inorder for it to show calories burned I must make sure the fitbit is very snug around my wrist, but it never gives a correct step count, since I'm not walking. If it showed 20 minutes of peak intensity it should have showed calories burned commensurate with your intensity.
