Dancing December Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

Here we are — the last month of the year, holiday food everywhere you look, all sorts of social obligations ... so .... why not recommit to your minimum daily fitness/eating goals -- and maybe even DANCE a bit around the mistletoe -- just to make sure you don’t lose the baseline you’ll aim to beat next month when you plan out 2019?

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.
How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month look for and post pictures of at least 3 outdoor holiday displays while out and about.

Union Station - DCUnion Station - DC 34th Street - Baltimore34th Street - Baltimore

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

When I get back I’ll update the table with my post-vacation TW to use as my starting weight this month.

I was doing ok on the ‘no seconds’ challenge until this evening when my waiter brought out the wrong entree for dinner — instead of fish of the day, he brought the pasta of the day.  So he left the pasta and brought out the fish 20 minutes later.  Well, couldn’t help picking at that pasta while everyone else was eating, and then the fish looked pretty good when it came out later ... so I think that counts as seconds — even though I only ate about half of each :-).  Honest!

On vacation, so goals other than steps will have to wait. But according to fitbit I climbed 63 floors today! Although we did walk quite a ways uphill, most floors were due to driving up and then taking a cable car to the top of the Teide Volcano (3,700 m above sea level).

Drove over hill, over dale, from north to south side of the island 🌴 today. It took 6½ hours because it was not on the freeway. 😐 Then more time to find the hotel with an unhelpful GPS, and a fender-bender at a tiny round-about. 😓

So far so good.  By the time I got home this evening it was in the lower 20s, too cold for me for walking outside.  Lots of walking inside today, needing to get groceries saved the day.

Does anybody else have a sedentary job?  Do you guys go to the gym to get steps in?  We only have one day with a high temperature in the 40s this week so I need options other than taking a walk in the evening.  I can't be going shopping every day!

Dancing December Goals and Current Standings as of 12/3:

  • 10K Steps each day: 3/31
  • 15k Steps on 7 days: 0/7
  • 15 running days: 2/15
  • 4 days of cross-training: 0/4

Half marathon training is going well.  Slowly adding miles.  I'm doing treadmill running on my weekday running days because it's too dark and cold outside to run at 5am.

On the 1st, I ran over 4 miles outside in 36F weather with winds up to 30mph.  It was rough and my last mile was like a 12 minute mile, but I felt really good and enjoyed the run.  Every time a big gust of cold wind would slap me in the face, I just kept saying "grit, grit, grit" because running in adverse weather helps build grit and character.  At least that's what I'm telling myself, haha.

Really hoping to not miss a 10K step day this month.  We are predicted to have ice and snow on Saturday, so I'll have to shift my long run to Sunday and will probably do a strength training workout from home on Saturday instead.

There's a 10K race on the 15th I think I'll sign up for.  Just keeping an eye on the weather before I pay the entry fee.

Hope everyone smashes their December goals!
